Both Basketball Teams In Action Saturday Against Roberts Wesleyan
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 7, 2013) - Both the men's and women's basketball teams will be in action Saturday, Feb. 9 as they host East Coast Conference foe Roberts Wesleyan College in the Pratt Recreation Center. Tip-offs are set for 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., respectively.
The LIU Post women's basketball team (14-6 overall, 7-5 ECC) is looking to bounce back on Saturday after suffering a 74-71 loss at Queens College Wednesday night. Junior
Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) was the highlight of the game, leading all players with a career-high 30 points. Senior
Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) is currently fifth in the ECC with points per game, averaging 14.3. Also averaging double figures is Peters who is currently averaging 11.6 points per game. Marciniak is also the leader on the glass, pulling in 9.3 boards per game, and senior
Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.) is right behind grabbing 9.1 rebounds per game. As a team, the Pioneers are shooting 39.1% (484-1238) from the floor, including 30.7% (101-329) from beyond the arc. The Pioneers have been tremendous on the glass, out-rebounding their opponents 885-724 for a margin of +8.1. Also the combination of Kopp and Marciniak has helped the squad to 4.0 blocks per game, while their opponents have registered a mere 2.2 blocks per game.
Currently on a two game losing streak, the women's basketball team of Roberts Wesleyan (10-10 overall, 5-7 ECC) is led by senior Brittany Williams and Marissa Bunce. The duo is averaging 9.8 and 8.7 points, respectively, and Bunce is also averaging a team-leading 3.6 assists per game. Sophomore Marissa Sell has been an asset these past two games, nearly averaging a double-double over the span with 9.0 points and 10.5 rebounds. As a whole, the Redhawks are shooting 40.1% (443-1106) from the field, including 30.0% (111-370) from downtown.
On the men's side, the Pioneers (14-6 overall, 9-3 ECC) are coming off a 78-60 road win at Queens College Wednesday night. Senior
Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) paces a trio of Pioneers in double figures for the season, currently averaging an ECC-best 18.4 points per game. Also in the top five in the conference with 16.8 points per game is junior
Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.), who also leads the Pioneers with 9.1 boards per game, good for second in the ECC. Rounding out the top three scorers for the Pioneers is senior
Jonathan Kohler (Bordentown, N.J.) with 12.3 points per game. Kohler is making an ECC-high 85.4% (35-41) of his free throws, and senior
Billy Butler (Elmont, N.Y.) remains the conference leader in assists per game with 5.2. LIU Post is shooting 47.3 % (560-1184) from the field and out rebounding opponents by a whopping margin of +10.4 (847-639).
The Redhawk men come into the game with an overall record of 7-14, including 4-9 in ECC action. Senior Devin Grimes paces the offense with 15.2 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game. Mike Stone and Tyrel Dixon round out the top three scorers for the Redhawks, averaging 11.5 and 11.3 points per game, respectively. Stone is shooting an impressive 44.4% (48-108) from downtown. Roberts Wesleyan is shooting 40.2% (513-1276) from field goal range, including 32.4% (126-389) from beyond the arc.
