Basketball Teams to Play For Coaches vs. Cancer
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 12, 2014) - The LIU Post men's and women's basketball teams will be playing along with the American Cancer Society's Coaches vs. Cancer program when they take on Molloy on Feb. 26 at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville, N.Y.
This marks the fifth-straight year in which the Pioneers will take part to raise cancer awareness. All members of the LIU Post and Molloy men's and women's basketball coaching staffs will wear sneakers during the games.
"Sometimes referred to as 'suits and sneakers,' it quickly gets the attention of fans watching the game that wonder why our coaching staff would wear sneakers with dress clothes," Head Women's Basketball Coach
Deirdre Moore said. "Coaches vs. Cancer is supposed to bring awareness to the need of further cancer research. Many families are impacted by cancer – my family included."
The Coaches vs. Cancer program is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) that empowers basketball coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. The program leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of basketball coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs.
Because cancer has touched so many of our nation's basketball coaches, Coaches vs. Cancer offers them the unique opportunity to fight the disease. Through integrated fundraising activities and public awareness campaigns, participating coaches are truly making a difference in the fight against cancer and are raising awareness in their communities about the importance of cancer prevention, early detection, and making healthy lifestyle choices.
Both LIU Post basketball squads will have $1 donation cards that fans can purchase. All proceeds will go to cancer research.
