Staten Island, NY| On Friday, the LIU Post men's and women's indoor track and field teams kicked off the 2017-18 season on Friday at the Metro Season Opener at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
Both squads posted impressive results, sparked by very strong performances from new freshmen and graduate recruits.
In a large 200m field packed with talent, freshman Jackie Ginty (Islip Terrace, NY) starred with a fine outing, winning her heat decisively in 26.61 seconds.
In the 4x400m Relay, the Pioneers placed second in their heat in 4:12.51 on the strength of a 61.25 leg by sophomore Alexandra Okon (Laurel, Maryland), and a thrilling, come-from-behind anchor leg by freshman Nataly Ramirez (Breentwood, NY), timed in 61.5.
In the 800m Run, LIU Post placed fourth and fifth, respectively, with sharp outings from Okon, finishing in 2:22.56, and sophomore Nicolette Agostinacchio, (Levittown, NY), finishing in 2:29.37.
In the high jump competition, the Pioneers took fifth and sixth with leaps of 1.50 meters from freshman Kayra Theodore (Elmont, NY) and sophomore Nicole Costanzo (Nesconset NY).
Theodore scored again in two additional jump competitions, taking second place in the long jump with a leap of 5.49m (missing first by less than 3 inches) and taking another fifth place in the triple jump with a mark of 10,05 meters.
In the weight throw competition, sophomore Kaitlyn Klein (Richmondville, NY) starred, heaving the iron 47'5" for third place. Her throw establishes a new LIU Post school record, breaking the old mark of 44'6" set by Jenn Wishen in 2003.
Also shining in the Weight Throw were Kaitlyn's freshman teammates: Alyssa Farrell (Commack, NY) notching a personal best of 39'4", good for eighth place; and Tatyanna Ogbue (Oceanside, NY) who placed ninth with a throw of 33'6'.
