CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (May 5, 2017) - The East Coast Conference revealed its year-end award recipients for women's lacrosse on Friday, and LIU Post junior cageminder
Olivia Kirk (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder
Alyssa Mallery (Wantagh, N.Y.) were named the league's goalkeeper and rookie of the year, respectively.
Kirk repeated as the ECC Goalkeeper of the Year in 2017, after compiling a 14-2 record between the pipes with 106 saves and a 6.51 goals-against average. She currently ranks in the Top-5 in Division II in goals-against average and save percentage (.520) and has yielded eight goals or fewer in 12 of her 16 appearances thus far.
Meanwhile, Mallery, a three-time ECC Rookie of the Week selection, has been an immediate contributor on offense in her debut season. She has tallied the fourth-most goals (26) on the team and dished out seven assists for 33 points. Additionally, Mallery places eighth amongst the league's leaders in draw controls with 50.
Senior attacker
Connor Bird (Syosset, N.Y.), senior defender
Cara Douglas (West Islip, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder
Ryan McKinney (Downingtown, Pa.) accompanied Kirk on the All-ECC First Team.
Bird, who paces the team and ranks fourth in the ECC in draw controls (56), leads the green and gold in scoring with 58 points (40 G, 18 A). She has recorded a point in every game she has appeared in this year and tallied multiple goals in 12 of the Pioneers' 16 contests.
Douglas has anchored a defensive unit that has limited the opposition to the fewest goals allowed (103) in the ECC. She has also totaled 28 ground balls, 17 draw controls and 17 caused turnovers in 2017.
McKinney has notched a team-leading 49 goals and added eight assists for 57 points. She currently leads all of Division II in free-position goals per game (1.38) and free-position percentage (.667).
Mallery was joined by red-shirt senior attacker
Alexis Newman (Medford Lakes, N.J.) and senior defender
Kelly Backus (Oceanside, N.Y.) on the All-ECC Second Team.
Newman ranks third on the team in scoring with 35 points (27 G, 8 A), while Backus has assisted the Pioneer defense in holding opponents to the fifth-lowest goals per game average (6.44) in the nation.
