BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU Post men's basketball team shot 63 percent from beyond the arc in the second half, pulling away late to down the University of the District of Columbia 83-73 Jan. 17.
The win lifts the Pioneers to 5-3 in conference play and 7-11 overall. With the loss, the Firebirds fall to 1-15 overall and 0-8 against conference opponents.
The Pioneers held a 40-26 advantage on the glass, led by a career-high 17-rebound night for sophomore
Kyle Doucette. The big man also chipped in 12 points to notch his first double-double of the season. Fellow classmate
Jared Rivers had a big night as well, scoring 25 points on 7-of-16 shooting, including 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. Senior
Aary Bibens chipped in 16 points, while classmate
Kyle Taylor-McLeggan put home 12 points, including an electrifying one handed slam on the break late in the contest.
Despite trailing for much of the first half, the Pioneers took a two-point lead (34-32) into the locker room after Bibens banked in a 30-foot three-pointer at the halftime buzzer. The Green and Gold used that momentum to begin the second half on a 13-7 burst to take a 47-39 lead. The Firebirds were not ready to go down easy however, as UDC used a full-court press to disrupt the Pioneer offense, chipping away to eventually level the scoring, 56-56, just past the midway point of the half. Rivers knocked down a three a minute later however, giving the Pioneers the lead for good. That triple ignited an 8-0 run by Rivers himself to put the game out of reach. McLeggan knocked down two free throws in the final minute before throwing down the slam to put an exclamation point on the double-digit victory.
The Pioneers return to action this weekend when they travel to Sparkill to battle St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 3:00 p.m.
