QUEENS, N.Y. – Sophomore
Jared Rivers scored 20 points, including 16 in the second half, but the Pioneers dropped a closely contested matchup with Queens College, 69-66 on the road Feb. 10.
Rivers added to his point total with eight rebounds and seven assists in the loss. Senior
Hunter Powell scored a career-high 12 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting effort from the field, and senior
Kyle Taylor-McLeggan added 15 points.
The game was a back and forth battle all afternoon, as the Knights held the largest lead of the contest at seven points during the second half. The contest featured three ties and five lead changes, but the Pioneers were never able to pull ahead by more than two points.
After Queens took a two-point lead (35-33) into halftime, senior
Aary Bibens leveled the scoring with a layup during the first minute of the second period. Minutes later, freshman
Austin Kennedy gave the Pioneers the lead with a layup off a feed from Rivers, putting the Green and Gold up 39-38. Queens used a 10-3 run to put the momentum back in its favor, leading 48-42 with 14 minutes to play.
Kennedy knocked down a three-point field goal with seven minutes to play to give LIU Post a 56-55 lead. After the Knights retook the lead, Rivers drilled a jumper and a three-pointer to give the Pioneers a 61-59 lead, but it was the final advantage that they would hold in the contest. Out of a media timeout, the Knights'
Isaac Grant hit jump shots on consecutive possessions to give Queens the lead, 63-61, and the Pioneers could not recover. Both teams went scoreless for the next two minutes before the Knights hit two free throws to lead by four points (65-61) with 34 ticks remaining. A banked-in jumper by sophomore
Kyle Doucette and a last-second three-pointer by Rivers were not enough as the Pioneers fell by the 69-66 final.
Despite the loss, the Pioneers remain in sole possession of fourth place at 8-6 in the league standings, as Roberts Wesleyan lost to Daemen 77-70 on Friday evening.
The Green and Gold return to action on the road on Valentine's Day, Wednesday, Feb. 14, when it looks to take down the University of the District of Columbia at 7:00 p.m.
