Okon, Klein & Smith Win Gold at ECC Indoor Track Championships

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Junior duo Kaitlyn Klein and Alexandria Okon along with freshman DeAndre Smith of the LIU Post men's & women's track & field teams earned first-place finishes at the East Coast Conference (ECC) Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday night inside the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
 
Klein won the weight throw, set a new program record and qualified for the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC/IC4A) Championships with a mark of 15.01 meters.  Okon clocked in at 2:18.21 seconds to win the 800-meters and Smith won the high jump after clearing 1.95 meters in a dramatic jump off.


 
The Pioneer women finished fourth with 68 points and performed strongly in the field events. Freshman Imoniri Aghomon took second in the weight throw with a distance of 14.98 meters and sophomore Tatyanna Ogbue finished seventh with a personal-best throw of 13.05 meters.
 
Klein's mark of 11.42 meters in the shot put saw her finish second while Aghomon took third with a mark of 11.17 meters. Ogbue finished sixth after a throw of 10.10 meters.
 
Two Pioneers finished inside the top-eight in the high jump as sophomore Kayra Theodore cleared 1.55 meters to finished second sophomore Nicole Costanzo finished sixth after a leap of 1.45 meters.
 
Sophomore Kelly Holownia also finished fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 10.25 meters.
 
In the track events, Okon was the standout performer as she won the 800 meters and was part of the 4x400 meter relay team that finished second with a time of 4:02.81 seconds, a season-best time by almost six seconds, for the team of sophomore Nataly Ramirez (63.4), Okon (59.1), junior Nicolette Agostinacchio (60.4) and sophomore Jacky Ginty (59.1).
 
Senior Kaitie Schillaci clocked in at 3:12.90 seconds in the 1000 meters to finish fifth while Ramirez also earned a fifth-place finish in the 500 meters after posting a time of 1:20.99 seconds. Sophomore Kathryn Ginty posted a personal-best time of 8.34 in the 60 meters.
 
LIU Post's men tied for sixth with 26 points and were highlighted by Smith winning the high jump and qualifying for the ECAC/IC4A Championships.  
 
Sophomore Destyn Harding took second in the 60 meters after crossing the line at 6.97 and was an IC4A qualifier on time standard. He also finished fifth in the 200 meters with a time of 22.73.
 
Freshman Ismail Abdullah finished third in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.48 and freshman Robert Skidmore took eighth in the shot put with a personal-best mark of 12.35 meters. Freshman Andrew Ayroso earned a personal-best in the 400 meters (55.64),  and freshman Troy Benson anchorred the 4x400 meter relay with a personal-best time of 52.4.
